Tattoo Preparation
A successful tattoo session isn’t just about the design — your body plays a major role in how well you sit, how your skin responds, and how your tattoo heals. Here are important considerations to help ensure the best possible outcome:
🩸 Alcohol & Substances
Alcohol consumption in the days leading up to your appointment can negatively affect the liver and immune system, increase bleeding, and interfere with proper healing. This can impact ink retention and overall results. Arriving well-hydrated and substance-free supports your body’s ability to heal efficiently.
🛡️ Immune System & Health
If your immune system is compromised due to illness, chronic conditions, or medications, your body may struggle with both tolerance and healing. Active illnesses such as colds, flus, infections, or feeling “run down” can significantly affect your session. When in doubt, it’s always better to reschedule.
🌙 Menstrual Cycle Awareness
For some women, their monthly cycle can affect pain tolerance, swelling, and fatigue. During this time, the body may already be operating near its stress threshold, which can make longer tattoo sessions more challenging. This varies from person to person, but awareness helps with planning.
🧠 Stress, Sleep & Nervous System Regulation
High stress levels and lack of sleep can weaken the immune system and dysregulate the nervous system. This may increase sensitivity to pain, reduce endurance during the session, and slow healing afterward. Well-rested bodies heal better.
🍽️ Nutrition & Blood Sugar
Eating a solid meal before your appointment is essential. Stable blood sugar helps prevent dizziness, nausea, shaking, or fainting. Bringing snacks and water—especially for longer sessions—can make a noticeable difference in comfort and stamina.
👕 Clothing & Accessibility
Wear clothing that allows easy access to the area being tattooed and that you won’t mind potentially getting stained. Comfort matters, and appropriate clothing helps the tattooer work efficiently while keeping you relaxed. If unsure, ask your artist beforehand.

Additional Important Considerations Clients Often Miss
💧 Hydration
Proper hydration in the days leading up to your appointment improves skin elasticity and ink uptake. Dry, dehydrated skin is harder to tattoo and may heal more slowly.
🧴 Skin Condition
Avoid sunburns, excessive tanning, or skin irritation before your appointment. Over-exfoliating, shaving too aggressively, or using harsh products can compromise the skin barrier.
💊 Medications & Supplements
Certain medications and supplements (such as blood thinners, aspirin, or some herbal supplements) can increase bleeding or affect healing. Always disclose medications honestly so your artist can make informed decisions.
🧍♂️ Physical Fatigue
Heavy workouts, intense physical labor, or dehydration shortly before your appointment can reduce endurance and increase inflammation. Treat your tattoo day like a recovery day for your body.
🧘♀️ Mental Readiness
Being mentally prepared—understanding the time commitment, discomfort, and aftercare responsibility—goes a long way. Anxiety and tension can increase pain perception and shorten tolerance.
Tattoo Aftercare
Second Skin (Tegaderm) Aftercare Instructions
What Is Second Skin?
• The clear film applied to your tattoo is called Tegaderm, also known as Second Skin.
• This breathable bandage allows oxygen to pass through while protecting your tattoo from external elements such as bacteria, dust, and friction.
• It is commonly used for burns and wounds and is highly effective for tattoo healing.
How Long to Keep It On
• You may keep the bandage on for up to 3 days.
• This helps minimize the risk of infection and is especially beneficial if you work in a sweaty, dusty, or dirty environment.
Discuss the time frame of keeping the bandage on with your artist as some finer detailed tattoos may be better healing with less time being covered.
Monitoring for Reactions
• A small number of people may react to the adhesive.
• Watch for:
• Redness or rash around the edges
• Excessive itching or burning
• The tattoo feeling unusually hot underneath
• If you notice any of these signs, remove the bandage immediately and begin the wash and aftercare process.
• If sweat, plasma, or fluid begins pooling under the bandage (“ink sacs”), remove the bandage as well.
Removing the Bandage
• Remove the bandage under warm to hot running water in the shower or sink.
• This helps loosen the adhesive and prevents skin irritation.
• Peel it slowly and gently, pulling it back over itself rather than straight up.
• Do not remove it dry.
Cleaning Your Tattoo
• Once the bandage is removed:
• Wash your hands with unscented antibacterial soap for at least 30 seconds.
• Using clean hands, gently wash the tattoo with warm water and the same soap.
• Remove any slime, residue, or debris.
• Rinse thoroughly.
• Allow the tattoo to air dry until the skin tightens.
• Apply a small amount of tattoo aftercare product or a non-paraben, unscented lotion using clean hands.
Less is more — do not over-apply.
Ongoing Care
• Keep your tattoo clean and lightly moisturized throughout the day.
• Wash it:
• Before bed
• When you wake up
• After sweating
• Carry your aftercare product with you to maintain this routine while at work or on the go.
Preventing Infection & Promoting Healing
• Keep the tattoo clean at all times.
• Avoid sweat pooling on the tattoo.
• Wear loose, breathable clothing — avoid tight or fibrous fabrics.
• Avoid sleeping directly on the tattoo when possible.
• Keep sheets and bedding clean to prevent sticking.
• Keep children and pets away from the tattoo.
• Do not soak the tattoo in baths, pools, lakes, or hot tubs until fully healed.
• Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds while healing.
• Once healed, always use sunscreen to protect your tattoo.
• Reducing alcohol intake can support faster healing, as alcohol can compromise your immune system.
Important Reminders
• Do not pick, scratch, or peel your tattoo.
• Healing times vary — listen to your body.
• If something doesn’t feel right, contact your artist.
• Always follow your artist’s advice over friends, family, or online suggestions.
Taking aftercare seriously is crucial for the best possible outcome of your tattoo.
Traditional (Saran Wrap) Tattoo Aftercare Instructions
This method is recommended for clients who have allergies, sensitivities, or a previous negative reaction to adhesive bandages such as Tegaderm or Second Skin.
⸻
Immediately After Your Tattoo
• Your tattoo has been wrapped with plastic wrap (Saran Wrap) to protect it from bacteria, friction, and contact during the first stage of healing.
• Keep this wrap on for 2–4 hours after your appointment unless otherwise instructed by your artist.
⸻
Removing the Wrap
• Wash your hands thoroughly with unscented antibacterial soap.
• Carefully remove the plastic wrap.
• Do not re-wrap the tattoo unless instructed by your artist.
⸻
First Wash
• Using warm water and unscented antibacterial soap, gently wash the tattoo with clean hands.
• Remove any plasma, excess ink, or residue.
• Rinse thoroughly.
• Pat dry with a clean paper towel or allow the tattoo to air dry.
Do not use cloth towels, loofahs, or sponges.
⸻
Initial Aftercare
• Once the tattoo is fully dry and the skin feels tight, apply a very thin layer of tattoo aftercare product or a non-paraben, unscented lotion.
• Do not over-apply — excessive moisture can slow healing and trap bacteria.
⸻
Ongoing Care (Days 1–7)
• Wash the tattoo 2–3 times daily:
• Morning
• Evening
• After sweating
• Apply a light layer of aftercare product after each wash.
• Keep the tattoo clean, dry, and lightly moisturized.
⸻
Sleeping & Clothing
• Wear loose, breathable clothing over the tattoo.
• Avoid sleeping directly on the tattoo when possible.
• If the tattoo sticks to bedding, gently loosen it with warm water — do not pull it dry.
• Keep bedding clean during the healing process.
⸻
Preventing Infection & Irritation
• Avoid excessive sweating and friction.
• Keep pets and children away from the tattoo.
• Avoid soaking in baths, pools, lakes, or hot tubs.
• Do not scratch, pick, or peel the tattoo — flaking and itching are normal.
• Avoid direct sun exposure while healing.
• Once healed, protect your tattoo with sunscreen.
⸻
Alcohol, Healing & Health
• Reducing alcohol intake during healing may support faster recovery, as alcohol can suppress the immune system.
• Stay hydrated and maintain good overall hygiene.
⸻
Important Notes
• Healing times vary from person to person.
• Redness, swelling, and warmth are normal in the first few days.
• If you notice signs of infection such as:
• Increasing redness
• Severe swelling
• Pus
• Fever
Seek medical advice promptly.
• If you have questions or concerns at any point, contact your artist.
Proper aftercare is essential for the best long-term result of your tattoo.
